Recently, I was realizing just how many wonderful life lessons there are to be learned from Disney movies and as I’ve been considering the things I hope to instill in my own children someday, I thought I would make a list of some of the ones that stuck out to me the most. These are just some of the life lessons I hope my kids, and yours, will learn from these Disney movies.
From “Up”: Appreciate the little things
Throughout “Up”, Carl is pursuing the “big adventure” that he never got to have with Ellie, but in the end realizes that his relationship with Ellie was the real adventure. I hope you learn to take the time to appreciate the relationships in your life and stop to smell the roses and enjoy the journey – because it really is more about the journey than the destination as Carl discovered.
From “Tangled”: Face your fears
I hope you will learn to face your fears head on not let fear of failure keep you from trying – locked away in a tower – because you’ll never know if you never try. If things don’t turn out the way you had hoped? Well, then “just find a new dream”.
From “Snow White”: Being Kind is Beautiful
Being pretty is nice, but being kind is even better. Being the “fairest in the land” is worth nothing if you have an ugly heart and a mean spirit.
From “Monsters Inc.”: Don’t judge a book by its cover
Sometimes first impressions are wrong and you can’t tell what someone is like simply by looking at them, just as Sulley and Mike discovered of little Boo. I hope that you will learn not to judge others by their appearance and will get to know them for what’s inside, because that is what truly matters.
From “Peter Pan”: You’re never too old to have fun
There will come a time (probably when you are a teenager) when you might think you are too mature to be silly and have fun, but take a cue from Peter Pan and enjoy your youth. You can be responsible later.
From “Toy Story”: Enjoy the present
Don’t live in the past or worry about the future like Woody does throughout the movie. Just know that things change and will always be changing, so just try to enjoy the present. This is a life lesson for me as you are growing up oh-so-quickly as well!
From “Beauty and the Beast”: Don’t settle
When you are choosing a person to spend your life with, I hope that you never settle. Sure Belle could’ve settled for the Gaston, the man everyone thought she should be with, but then she would’ve missed out on her true love. True love is worth waiting for, so don’t be in a rush.
From “Pocahontas”: Learn to accept differences
Don’t be afraid of people who are different than you are. Our differences are what make us beautiful.
From “Pinocchio”: Honesty is the best policy
Pinocchio learned the hard way that telling lies can have negative consequences. Honesty really is the best policy.
From “Finding Nemo”: Just Keep Swimming
Dory gives some wise advice for when things get tough, “Just keep swimming”…life will trow plenty of rough patches your way, but don’t give up…you’ll get through it.
From “Mulan”: You are strong and capable
Yes you are a girl, but that does not mean that you are any less strong or capable because of it. Just like the warrior Mulan, you can accomplish great things little one.
From “The Little Mermaid”: Remember where you came from
It’s OK to change and grow and explore new things, but I hope that you will always remember where you came from and who you are.
From “Cinderella”: Attitude is everything
Even when circumstances weren’t the best, Cinderella chose to have a good attitude and stay positive. I hope that you will learn to do the same.
From “Aladdin”: Money can’t buy happiness
Aladdin thought that being rich would solve all his problems and give him all the things he desired, but in the end, he realized (as I hope you will) that relationships are more important than things and money can’t buy true happiness.
From “Brave”: I will always love you
There will be times when we will disagree. I may want different things for your life than what you want, but always know that even though we may not always see eye to eye…at the end of the day I will always love you and be there for you.
